Procedure for Approval to Conduct Research at Grand Canyon University

  1. Applicability:This procedure defines the standards and parameters for conducting research at Grand Canyon University.
  2. Policy Statement:It is the policy of Grand Canyon University (GCU) that no research may be conducted on its premises or virtually, with its faculty, staff, and employees or students without the approval from the Director of Academic Research, the Institutional Review Board (IRB), and a designated University official.
  3. Procedure:
    1. Persons wishing to conduct research at or with GCU should submit an Application to Conduct Research at GCU by clicking or typing https://cirt.gcu.edu/research/researchsupport/irb/siterequest. In addition, contact the Director of Academic Research, at GCU by phone 602.639-7804 or by email [email protected].
    2. The Application must include:
      1. the purpose and scope of the research,
      2. the duration of the study,
      3. the target population,
      4. the use of GCU’s resources,
      5. the use of data generated from the study, and
      6. the credentials of the researcher.
    3. The Director of Academic Research will review the proposed research for:
      1. its appropriateness to the mission,
      2. its impact on the operations of the institution,
      3. its impact on the institutions employees and/or students,
      4. its potential impact on the reputation of the institution, and
    4. If the Director’s review determines that the research is not appropriate or feasible for Grand Canyon University, the Director will notify the researcher that the project may not be initiated.
    5. If the Director’s review determines that the research is appropriate and feasible for Grand Canyon University, s/he will present the project and his/her recommendation to the the IRB Committee.
    6. The IRB Committee will review the proposal and vote to approve or not approve the project. The vote of the Committee in conjunction with the Provost is final.
    7. If the research proposal is approved, the researcher must submit the protocol in the designated IRB system for regular IRB review.
